What is BRCGS Gluten-Free Certification?

BRCGS Gluten Free was introduced as the Gluten-Free Certification Programme. Furthermore, the standard is now on issue 3. Unfortunately, gluten intolerance is a common problem. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. An adverse reaction is increasingly common.

Celiac disease is the most severe form of gluten intolerance. The increase in intolerance has resulted in dedicated ‘Free From’ sections appearing in supermarkets. We are increasingly seeing Gulten Free (GF) dishes on restaurant menus too.

It is a disease that affects about 1% of the population and may damage the digestive system. However, 0.5 – 13% of people also have gluten sensitivity, a milder form of gluten intolerance that still causes problems.

There is no cure for celiac disease or gluten intolerance. The only treatment is a strict gluten-free diet.

The certification protects consumers by confirming that food, drink, or supplements meet strict standards for gluten-free safety.

This standard provides a framework for the management and control of gluten in gluten-free products, in the processing of:
